Google Pagerank is the measure of how important Google thinks a website or a web page is.It takes into account several factors in calculating the pagerank of a site but the most important is the backlinks that point towards your site.If the backlinks are from sites related to your site's topic that google considers authority sites , then your site is likely to get a higher pagerank. You can have a google pagerank of 1 to 10.To see the pagerank of a site you'd need to have the URL="http://www.toolbar.google.com"]google toolbar[/url] installed.

PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at considerably more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; for example, it also analyzes the page that casts the vote.

How well does Google view backlinks coming from forums? I write a site that has a TON of backlinks, but they are almost all from forums because of the nature of the site. I'm wondering if the sheer amount of forum backlinks could actually be hurting my site. What do you guys think?

Backlinks from forums are good, but I would change the links and not always have the link to the homepage of your site. I know it is extra work, but manually create your signature when you post to forums and put in a url to your most relevant webpage - hyperlinking the text if you can with relevant keywords.
