AI Content Quality Signals

AI content quality signals are the ranking and evaluation criteria Google applies to assess whether content produced with AI assistance meets the same quality standards as human-written content. Google has stated publicly, including in its March 2024 spam policy updates, that the method of production is not the determinative factor — AI-generated text that is original, helpful, and demonstrates genuine expertise can rank well, while AI-generated text produced at scale to manipulate rankings is treated as spam regardless of technical quality. Signals thought to be relevant include demonstrated first-hand experience, original research or data, distinctive editorial perspective, factual accuracy, and the presence of verifiable authorship or organisational credibility. Content that reads as statistically averaged rather than informed by actual knowledge, or that closely mirrors training data without adding new insight, is more likely to be downranked under the Helpful Content System and Reviews System.
