A review snippet is a rich result format in which Google displays a star rating and review count beneath a search listing, drawn from Review or AggregateRating structured data on the page. The feature is available to specific content types including products, recipes, books, movies, software applications, and local businesses. In September 2023, Google removed review snippet support for several previously eligible types — including organisation and third-party review aggregator pages — following widespread markup abuse. Self-serving review markup, where a site rates its own products or services using first-party reviews without disclosing that they are self-serving, violates Google’s structured data policies and can result in the feature being revoked. Review counts and average scores must accurately reflect the reviews actually present on the page.
