Scaled Content Abuse

Scaled content abuse is a spam policy introduced by Google in March 2024 targeting the practice of generating large volumes of low-quality, unoriginal content at scale — whether through AI generation, automated tools, or human content farms — primarily to manipulate search rankings rather than to genuinely help users. The policy updates and formalises what had previously been addressed under headings such as “auto-generated content” in Google’s earlier guidelines, explicitly extending coverage to AI-generated text that does not add original value. Google stated that the key issue is not the method of production but whether the resulting content is designed to serve search engines rather than people. Sites identified as engaging in scaled content abuse may have affected pages demoted algorithmically or receive manual actions. The policy was announced alongside new guidance on expired domain abuse and site reputation abuse as part of a coordinated March 2024 anti-spam effort.
