HowTo Schema is a schema.org type used to mark up step-by-step instructional content, specifying the overall task, individual steps with names and text, and optionally tools, supplies, estimated time, and cost. Google supported HowTo as a rich result — showing steps directly in search results and within Google Assistant — from around 2019, making it valuable for DIY, recipe-adjacent, and tutorial pages. In August 2023, Google announced it was removing HowTo rich results for desktop, and by September 2023 the feature was fully deprecated for all surfaces, citing limited user value. Pages may still carry HowTo markup, and Google continues to parse it, but the structured data no longer produces a visual enhancement in standard search results as of that deprecation date. Removal had no reported impact on organic rankings.
