Passage Ranking

Passage ranking (sometimes called passage indexing) is a Google capability, rolled out in 2021, that allows specific passages within a longer page to be ranked independently for queries that the page as a whole might not rank for. Rather than evaluating only page-level relevance, Google’s systems can surface a well-written paragraph buried deep in an article if it directly answers a particular query. This means a long, comprehensive page can gain visibility for dozens of niche queries without needing dedicated pages for each. Passage ranking does not create separate URLs; the user is still taken to the full page, typically with the relevant passage highlighted. For SEOs the practical implication is that thorough, well-structured long-form content can earn additional rankings without any structural change to the site.
