Product Reviews Update

The Product Reviews Update was a series of Google algorithm updates that began in April 2021 with the stated aim of rewarding in-depth, original product reviews over thin content that merely aggregated information from manufacturer specifications. Google advised that high-quality review content should demonstrate first-hand experience with the product, include original photographs or video, compare the product against alternatives, and discuss both pros and cons. The update ran as a distinct named series through multiple refreshes in 2021, 2022, and 2023. In late 2023 Google folded the Product Reviews Update into its broader Reviews System, which extended the same quality criteria to reviews of services, businesses, and other topics beyond individual products. Sites that relied on templated, spec-copying review content saw significant ranking losses across the update’s iterations.
