Search Generative Experience was Google's experimental AI-powered search interface, tested in Google Search Labs from May 2023 before being replaced by [AI Overviews](/glossary/ai-overviews) at Google I/O in May 2024. It placed a large AI-generated answer block above organic results, sourcing content from multiple pages. The SGE label was retired but the underlying feature continued under the AI Overviews branding.
