Semantic search

Search that returns results based on the meaning behind a query rather than literal keyword matching. Modern Google has been semantic since Hummingbird (2013) and BERT (2019); the trend accelerated with neural matching, MUM, and most recently with embeddings-based retrieval used inside AI Overviews. Practical implication for SEO: optimising for an exact-match keyword string matters less than covering the underlying topic comprehensively, including related entities and likely follow-up questions. Stuffing pages with target keywords no longer outperforms a single clear answer to the user's actual question.
