Shell

A Shell is a type of computer software program that interprets user commends and enables the operating system to perform particular functions. As a shell is text-based it is known as a command line interface, and this means that a user can type in his / her commands in order to perform functions. The shell is only one layer higher than the operating system so a user is able to perform operations that are not possible using GUI. Such examples are moving and deleting files that could be locked within the system folder. However, a password may still be required and it is important that the user knows the correct syntax to type in the commands. Unix users tend to use shells quite frequently and two of the most popular Unix shells are the C Shell and the Bourne Shell. The majority of computer users will never have to use the shell.
