| A Shell is a type of computer software program that interprets user commends and enables the operating system to perform particular functions. As a shell is text-based it is known as a command line interface, and this means that a user can type in his / her commands in order to perform functions. The shell is only one layer higher than the operating system so a user is able to perform operations that are not possible using GUI. Such examples are moving and deleting files that could be locked within the system folder. However, a password may still be required and it is important that the user knows the correct syntax to type in the commands.
