Google Hummingbird is a major search algorithm overhaul launched in August 2013, announced publicly in September of that year. Unlike previous updates such as Panda and Penguin, which patched specific problems, Hummingbird was a ground-up rewrite of the core query-understanding engine. Its primary advance was handling conversational and long-tail queries as complete phrases rather than matching individual keywords, enabling more accurate answers to natural-language questions like “what is the nearest pharmacy open now”. Hummingbird laid the groundwork for the Knowledge Graph integration and voice search as those grew in importance. The algorithm is no longer discussed as a separate entity — its semantic understanding capabilities have since been superseded and extended by BERT and later neural ranking models.
