Position Zero

Position zero refers to a search result that appears above the traditional organic listings — most commonly a featured snippet. The term arose because, while the page might rank second or third organically, it is visually placed above the number-one result. Winning position zero typically requires a page that already ranks in the top ten and answers a specific question in a clear, structured way. Google pulls a short excerpt — a paragraph, list, or table — and displays it directly in the SERP. Position zero results attract high click-through rates for some queries but can also reduce clicks if the searcher’s question is fully answered without visiting the site, contributing to zero-click search behaviour.
